The country has 5 islands in the open sea. There are direct national borders with the 5 neighbouring countries Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. The distance between New York City and the Capital Sofia is about 7,590 km.According to the definition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bulgaria is one of the developing countries because of its lower economic performance. With an Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.816 Bulgaria counts as one of the high developed economies by UN-definition. However, the IMF does not share this classification.
