Romania is a country on the west coast of the Black Sea. The land has a total area of 238,400 km² and a total coastline of 225 km. This area is approximately 59% of the area of California. The country has about 50 islands. There are direct national borders with the 5 neighbouring countries Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine. The distance between New York City and the Capital Bucharest is about 7,660 km.According to the definition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Romania is one of the developing countries because of its lower economic performance. With an Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.816 Romania counts as one of the high developed economies by UN-definition. However, the IMF does not share this classification.
