Chile is a country in north-south direction along the South American Andes and directly on the Pacific. The land has a total area of 756,700 km² and a total coastline of 6,435 km. This area is approximately 109% of the area of Texas. The country has about 5,000 partially uninhabited islands. There are direct national borders with the 3 neighbouring countries Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. The distance between New York City and the Capital Santiago is about 8,260 km.According to the definition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Chile is one of the developing countries because of its lower economic performance. With an Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.847 Chile counts as one of the high developed economies by UN-definition. However, the IMF does not share this classification.
