Latvia is a country on the Baltic coast north of Lithuania and south of Estonia. The land has a total area of 64,490 km² and a total coastline of 498 km. This area is approximately 81% of the area of Maine. The country has about 20 islands. There are direct national borders with the 4 neighbouring countries Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania and Russia. The distance between New York City and the Capital Riga is about 6,760 km.With an Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.854 Latvia counts as one of the high developed economies by UN-definition. The IMF also shares this classification.
